Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB)
The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), also known as বাংলাদেশ পল্লী বিদ্যুতায়ন বোর্ড (Bangladesh Palli Bidyutayan Board), is a government-owned entity responsible for rural electrification in Bangladesh. Established in 1977, its primary mission is to extend electricity access to rural areas, fostering socio-economic development and improving the quality of life for millions of Bangladeshis living outside urban centers.
BREB operates through a cooperative model, partnering with Palli Bidyut Samities (PBSs), or Rural Electricity Cooperatives. These PBSs are independent, self-governing organizations responsible for the distribution and maintenance of electricity within their respective service areas. BREB provides the necessary infrastructure, technical expertise, and financial assistance to enable the PBSs to function effectively. This decentralized approach empowers local communities and promotes ownership of the electrification process.
The organization’s impact on rural Bangladesh has been profound. Prior to BREB’s formation, electricity access in rural areas was extremely limited. The expansion of electricity has enabled the growth of agriculture, industry, and commerce in these regions. Farmers can now utilize electric pumps for irrigation, increasing crop yields. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can operate more efficiently with reliable power supply, creating employment opportunities. Furthermore, improved access to electricity has facilitated better healthcare, education, and overall living standards for rural communities.
BREB faces numerous challenges in its pursuit of universal electrification. These include the high cost of infrastructure development, particularly in remote and geographically challenging areas. Maintaining a reliable power supply in the face of natural disasters and aging infrastructure is also a constant concern. Additionally, ensuring affordable electricity tariffs for low-income rural households is a key priority.
To address these challenges, BREB is actively involved in various initiatives. It is promoting the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance energy security. The organization is also investing in smart grid technologies to improve grid efficiency and reduce electricity losses. Furthermore, BREB is committed to providing training and capacity building programs for its staff and PBS members to ensure sustainable operation and maintenance of the electricity infrastructure.
In recent years, BREB has achieved significant progress in expanding electricity access to rural areas. Its efforts have contributed substantially to Bangladesh’s overall electrification rate. The organization continues to strive towards achieving universal electricity access, aiming to connect every household in rural Bangladesh to the power grid. This commitment reflects BREB’s vision of a brighter, more prosperous future for all Bangladeshis.
