Wanda Rutkiewicz: A Pioneering Mountaineer

Wanda Rutkiewicz was a Polish mountaineer, a computer engineer, and a pioneer in women’s high-altitude climbing. Born in Lithuania in 1943, she became a symbol of strength, determination, and independence in a sport dominated by men. Tragically, Wanda Rutkiewicz disappeared on Kangchenjunga in 1992. She was attempting to summit the mountain via a difficult route when she was caught in a storm. Her body was never recovered, and she was presumed dead. Her disappearance marked a profound loss for the mountaineering community, robbing the world of a true pioneer and inspiration.
