Günther Steiner, the South Tyrolean with a penchant for blunt language and unexpected soundbites, is a name synonymous with modern Formula 1. While his tenure as Team Principal of Haas F1 Team didn’t translate into consistent on-track success, his unfiltered personality made him a global sensation, especially through the Netflix docuseries, Drive to Survive.
Born in 1965, Steiner’s path to motorsport wasn’t straightforward. He initially trained as a mechanical engineer before delving into rallying. His early career saw him working as a mechanic and rally driver, experience that provided a solid foundation for his later management roles. He joined the motorsport world full-time in 1986.
Steiner’s Formula 1 journey began with Jaguar Racing in 2001, initially as a Managing Director. He later served as Technical Operations Director, before leaving the team after disagreements regarding team management. Following this, he played a pivotal role in the formation of Red Bull Racing, working alongside Dietrich Mateschitz to establish the team from the ground up. He was instrumental in defining their operational structure and philosophy before moving on to other projects within the Red Bull empire.
His most prominent role, however, came with Haas F1 Team. In 2014, Gene Haas, owner of NASCAR team Stewart-Haas Racing, entrusted Steiner with leading the new American Formula 1 project. This was a monumental task: building a competitive team from scratch, especially with Haas’s unconventional approach of outsourcing significant portions of the car’s design and manufacturing to Ferrari and Dallara. While this approach allowed Haas to enter F1 relatively quickly and cost-effectively, it also presented unique challenges in terms of integration and development.
Throughout his years at Haas, Steiner navigated a turbulent landscape of fluctuating performance, driver controversies (most notably involving Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen’s on-track clashes), and financial constraints. His candid communication, both within the team and with the media, provided a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a Formula 1 team. He never shied away from expressing his frustration, whether directed at underperforming drivers, technical failures, or strategic missteps.
It was this raw honesty, captured vividly in Drive to Survive, that catapulted Steiner to unexpected stardom. His colorful vocabulary (“We look like a bunch of wankers!”) and no-nonsense attitude resonated with viewers, turning him into a cult figure. He became a walking meme, spawning countless internet videos and fan merchandise.
Despite the popularity and the occasional points-scoring finish, Haas struggled to consistently compete with the established teams. Ultimately, the team’s lack of consistent progress and reported disagreements with Gene Haas led to Steiner’s departure as Team Principal at the end of the 2023 season. Despite the separation, Günther Steiner’s impact on Formula 1 is undeniable. He brought a dose of authenticity and unfiltered passion to a sport often perceived as overly corporate and sanitized, leaving an enduring legacy that extends far beyond the pit lane.
